A Catalog Of Letters

While searching for some more information I came across something on the Hachette Book Group Catalog page

There is a link to the catalog for the Little Brown and Company, it is rather a large PDF file (81.8 mb) but included in it are two snippets of interest.

The first is shown to the left, it is a general letter about future publishing, and includes this paragraph about S. -

"Our Fall 2013 list may well send you off the cliff. J.J. Abrams - one of our world's most creative, brilliant, and canny storytellers - leads the list with a collaborative novel with PEN Hemingway-nominate novellist Doug Dorst. It's a book that is so surprising we cannot reveal its contents. It's a story for J.J.'s millions of fans, a story for people who love books. I can promise that there is nothing in this book that will not surprise you."

The second letter is contained on the catalog page for the novel, I'll let you read it yourself, but it gives an insight into where the novel originated for J.J.

The only other real information on the page is that the book will be 352 pages long.

  1. I've heard about people leaving a book to read with a note in it to leave it for the next person, on the news a few years back. I think. At least something like it. Leave it to JJ Abrams to be inspired by it.

  4. Interesting that he found the book a way to connect with a "stranger". And now he is using the S tranger book to connect with all of us.

  5. Just Thinking,

There are a lot of interesting things about the "letter" first which is it is not dated or addressed to anyone in particular, save us.

References to Robert Ludlum, "crack open this special text" as "analog" idea, all reinforce code breaking skills will be needed

    but why spell out LAX?

also, because JJ like to jump around in time, modern and classic language could hint at characters in two time periods. The postcard says, "and in a way you are" here, so two people in the same place, different times, passing the book, back and forth, i.e, Frequency but with a book instead of a radio.

  6. I like the idea of connected time periods, it might fit in with the 22 items of "..evidence of their interaction.." the items described in the book could be things that exist now and fit into the story narrative.

  7. Very interesting- somehow the book- and postcard I guess- can be passed back and forth in time? So no date on the card, as it exists in both Aprils perhaps.

Had the idea tonight that the video may go with the novel proper, and the post card with the side notes. Could be the classic and modern languages refer to those two also.

    1. This might have been an inspiration for the notes between E & others. Though no time element that I can see. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin_and_Sabine
